Selecting a good or economical registrar is important, but once you select the registrar, then what? One of the things I wanted to accomplish in creating this blog is to help people figure out good, fun, interesting, compelling domain names to register for creating a website. After all that is where it all starts. I will be writing a lot more on the subject, and here is an article I found that provides a nice guide of domain name selection basics, and some nuances to consider.
Things to Know Before Selecting A Domain For Your Web Business by shakeel
1. Introduction and Meaning. For selecting the best domain name suited for your web business you need to first understand the meaning of domain name and the types of domain name available in Internet. Domain names are actually URLs used to identify particular Web pages. A domain name is divided intof three parts: the second section is known as domain separated by a "dot" and the third section is a TLD. TLD means Top level domain third section and thus the second section is called as second level domain. Every domain name has its own TLD. TLD differs according to the categories and types of websites.
Most common top-level domains:
com - Commercial, for commercial websites & profit organizations. net- Networks, for organizational websites. org- Organisations, for non profit organizational websites & individuals. edu- Education, for educational websites, degree granting colleges & universities. info- Information- for informational websites. gov- Government, for websites ruled by Government, federal government agencies. uk- for United Kingdom websites. us- for United States websites. ca- for Canadian websites.
2. Selecting the correct TLD. .com TLD is the most popular and common domain TLD used today nationwide. You can select a particular domain extension according to the category of services offered by your websites as mentioned above. However .com TLD is the best for commercial websites looking ahead for online profit making businesses.
3. Domain names are preferred to be small. Domain names are usually preferred to be small as short and snappy domain names just explaining their product brands or categories are easy to remember and to pronounce. You should make sure yourself while selecting a domain name that the name is clear enough to spell and make sure that it can be easily pronounced over the phone calls or on the radio.
4. SEO friendly domain names. The most important search engine i.e. Google gives lot of weight to keywords in the domain names. So it is more efficient if you select a domain name which is small and explains the name or category of your product or if the domain name is the name of the important keyword itself. On the contrary I would prefer that you keep your domain name elegant and user-friendly. When page ranks come into priority Google gives higher ranks to Domain names having TLD as gov, in, info, org, and then com. The reason after this is that search engines gives importance to websites offering enormous data even termed as guide, dictionary, webopedia or encyclopedia as this helps visitors to study things online thus hitting huge traffic on their search engines.
5. The domain name should be checked by trademarks. Many times customers are fooled by the web hosting companies by giving them domain names which look similar to trademark rights and protection but actually are not the registered trademarks. The second level name in the domain names are many times copied or similar to other names. So before selecting a domain name make sure yourself if the domain name offered to you is of registered trademark. You should not buy domain names of recognized brands or trademarks that actually does not belongs to you, even if they are available in the market. It's a violation of copyright law and you might owe an punishment for this in court of laws.
6. Check the domain name availability. Your web hosting company is a very important part of your online presence in Internet. Check availability of domain names from here..

Domain Name Registration Basics
I'll be putting up a guide to domain registration and registrars. Until that is done, here is an article on domain registration I found.
Domain Name Registration by Sinta Makah
This section introduces the concept of domain names, what they are and what they are used for. It also highlights some important misconceptions about cheap domain names and explains why every site should have one.
Historically, Network Solutions was the only company authorised to register domain names. This has now changed as the domain name market has become open to competition and several dozen companies have become authorized to act as domain name registrars. Domain name registrars are permitted to access and modify the master domain name database that contains the records of all the domain names registered to date. This database is currently maintained by Internic, a non-profit spinoff of Network Solutions.
Domain name registrars must pay Network Solutions a small fee for each domain name they register, but beyond that fixed cost they charge different amounts to cover their costs and make a profit. This means that whereas a year or two ago the going rate for a domain name registration was fixed at $70 for 2 years, now different companies offer different registration rates, for periods from 1 to 10 years. The requirements that must be fulfilled to become a domain name registrar are not particularly stringent, and this has sometimes led to trouble since some registrars do not have the robust technical infrastructure necessary to handle and process large volumes of domain name registrations. Some registrars have also cut corners by not implementing certain technical functionality in their local databases, such as the ability to transfer names to another party.
If you go with the world's largest registrar - GoDaddy.com , you will not be disappointed. If you're considering purchasing cheap domain names for investment (either in the form of new registrations, or on the secondary resale market), it's important to focus on how you're actually going to make money from your portfolio of domains. Without a clear up-front vision of the "path to liquidity" for your domain investments, it's better to stay out of the investment side of the business entirely. Remember, a cheap domain name that is gathering virtual dust (i.e. that's not generating traffic or sales inquiries) is worth nothing at all - in fact, it has a negative worth since you'll be required to pay a renewal fee every year to maintain the registration (and hence control over the domain.) On the other hand, if you can find ways to generate revenue from a cheap domain name even while you're waiting to unlock much greater value from it through a sales or leasing transaction, you're in a much stronger position. As long as a domain name pays for its own upkeep over the course of a year, there's nothing (in theory) to stop you holding on to it indefinitely. When considering purchasing cheap domain names for investment (whether new registrations or purchases made in the secondary market), it's important to focus on how you're actually going to make money from your portfolio of domains. I also will talk about domain parking from time to time and how to monetize those sleepy domains before you have a website up and running. So come back regularly for my reviews, and I also will be posting articles that I write or that I find that may be of interest in domain name registration and the domain registration insdustry.
